There is a certain magic in the air when autumn arrives. The light softens, the air crisps, and suddenly the everyday feels touched with golden hues. It’s the season of sunflowers, misty mornings, gentle rainfall, and a delicious excuse to slow down, just a little.
But here’s the truth: autumn always feels fleeting. Waiting patiently for the change in season, then before you know it, we’ve blinked, and it’s December. That’s why I’ve started a new tradition and provided myself a little mindful seasonal challenge — an autumn bucket list. Not the kind that piles on pressure or endless “shoulds” or “must-dos”, but a gentle, intentional collection of cozy experiences, tiny adventures, and self-reflective moments that help me actually savour the season at my own pace.
Think of your autumn list as a way to embrace what makes this season special to you. It is uniquely yours and will (and should) reflect your curiosities, favorite things, and maybe even something new to discover about yourself.
Cozy at Home
Not every bucket list adventure has to take you away from the warmth and coziness of home. Some of the best moments on my 2024 list were found indoors, tucked up in ordinary evenings that turned into something special. Cozy-at-home items are about creating warmth and comfort in your space, which is perfect for us introverts, those chilly rainy days, or when you just want to take a moment for yourself.
Some ideas to try:
- Light a candle that smells like chai, sandalwood, or apple pie. Let it set the tone for a quiet evening.
- Create your own “reading nook”. A comfortable chair and a blanket are all it takes.
- Listen to an autumn-themed music playlist, or create your own full of your favourites!
- Dust off an old fall-themed puzzle while listening to your favourite background movie.
- Try that seasonal recipe: a warm pumpkin sweet treat, or a hearty soup or stew.
Of course, autumn isn’t only about what happens indoors. Balance the coziness inside with crisp adventures beyond your entryway, and step outside.
Out in Nature
Autumn seasonal changes are one of Mother Nature’s greatest shows. When you step outside – even briefly – it can be a grounding and restorative moment for your senses. See the explosion of vibrant colours in the trees, smell the whispers of woodsmoke from your Neighbour’s chimney, feel the playful caress of wind on your cheeks, and hear the delightful ballet of crunching leaves underfoot.
Gentle suggestions:
- Sip a chai latte and enjoy the forest hues on a nature hike.
- Visit a pumpkin patch, or get lost among the rows in a corn maze.
- Keep a notebook of different bird calls – you may be surprised at who visits before winter!
- Wander the stalls at a local Farmer’s Market and pick up one seasonal item.
- Roast marshmallows over an open fire while wrapped in an oversized plaid jacket.
Nature often sparks creativity. Once you’ve gathered inspiration outdoors, why not bring it into your creative life?
Creative Exploration
As the seasons change and we slow down, autumn becomes a muse for writers, artists, and dreamers. It’s a season brimming with stories (both cozy and mysterious!) that inspire us to create. Adding a small creative challenge to your list gives you the space to experiment without any pressure.
Little inspirations:
- Read a ghost story by candlelight, or a seasonal romance by a roaring fire.
- Take photos of brightly coloured leaves, hazy morning fog, or lumpy oversized pumpkins: create a mini autumn mood board of photos.
- Sign up for a baking class to create (or strengthen) your skills.
- Paint a canvas with a fall scene. No inspiration? Choose a paint-by-numbers kit and just enjoy creating.
- Write a one-page story inspired by a walk or something you saw outside!
After stretching your imagination, there’s nothing like indulging your senses with the tastes and aromas of the season.
Food & Drink Adventures
One of the most joyful ways to celebrate the season is through its flavours. Autumn invites us into the kitchen (or into the cafés and markets) to taste the harvest and the comfort foods that come with cooler weather.
Spark special moments:
- Visit a U-pick squash farm and bring something new home to cook with.
- Host a “cozy drinks night” where you test out chai, spiced cider, or pumpkin-spiced lattes.
- Pluck a pumpkin from the Market and roast the seeds for a cozy mystery TV watching snack.
- Spend an afternoon at a trendy café, reading your fall theme book and wearing your best comfy sweater.
- Whip up your own autumn charcuterie board. Think cheeses, nuts, apples, and locally sourced honey. Add any seasonal favourites!
Good meals have a way of nourishing not just the body, but our relationships and often open the door to deeper connections – with others, and with ourselves.
Connection and Reflection
Autumn is a season of gathering, both with others and within ourselves. It invites us to share warmth, laughter, and comfort while also allowing us to pause and reflect. By blending moments of connection with self-reflection, your bucket list can hold both company and solitude activities in balance.
Set your intentions:
- Take a mindful walk with a friend. It’s all about great conversation and reconnecting.
- Start (or end) your week by writing down one small joy or lesson from the season so far.
- Host a cozy movie marathon. Popcorn optional, but blankets and fuzzy socks required!
- Incorporate a new mindfulness habit into your day (like morning stretching or meditation).
- Plan a “friend’s fall road trip” along a scenic drive, and perhaps explore somewhere new.
At the end of the day, it isn’t about how many items you check off your list. It’s about creating memorable moments and letting the season surprise you. Most importantly, let it bring you joy in whatever form it takes.
Final Thoughts
When I started making my own bucket list in 2024, I initially did it to fill some downtime in the cooler, less busy days. However, what was unexpected was the joy and simple pleasures it brought me, and I genuinely looked forward to doing each item I had gathered. Now, I hope that you are inspired to create and build your own list and, most importantly, find the enjoyment and fun in the process.
So here’s to an autumn of warm blankets and good books, laughter over steaming mugs, cool starlit walks, and kitchen experiments that fill the house with warmth and spice. What is on your list this year? I’d love to know what you’ll add to your own version, whether it’s grand or simple. What are you most looking forward to, and what will you treasure to carry you forward into the winter months ahead?
Stay curious, stay cozy, and never underestimate the power of tea and a good alibi.
Cara
I love Fall so this is great! I enjoy Fall walks in the cooler temperatures and purposefully crunching through all the leaves, my dog also likes to crunch.
As Fall brings Halloween, I always enjoy plenty of scary movies. Watching some old and new ones is always on my bucket list.
Thanks, Shelby! I definitely have a recent video of me crunching through leaves on a walk. It is very satisfying!
